I've got run my own stone and marble workshop for over twenty 5 years and it became a regular prevalence to own visitors trying to shop for a bit of stone or marble to try out stone carving. I've got a soft spot for all wannabee artists therefore I would never charge for the stone, asking instead that they carry back their piece of labor so that I may see how they got on.

Tools: Hardened steel chisels with picket handles like wood chisels used with a Wood mallet. Steel chisels with steel bulb finish, to be used with lead mallet or "dummy". Will be sawn with a hand saw simply sort of a timber saw.

Advantages: Terribly soft to work. all sorts of chisel will work. Will be cut to size with a hand saw, excellent for practising hammer and chisel technique. Disadvantages: : Risk of exposing hard shell within the course of work this may spoil the design of the finished job. Too weak to simply build skinny panel carvings as an example house signs or ornamental plaques.
Conclusion: : Finer grain than Cotswold etc. Better definition of carving. Good choice for 1st project.
Tools: Tungsten chisels solely, tungsten carvers chisels used with tiny steel club hammer.

Benefits: : High quality stone, fine grained very sensible definition of detail. Strong enough to form skinny panel carvings, for example house signs or variety plaques. Readily out there from garden centres.
Disadvantages: : Terribly laborious to work. steel tools can blunt very quickly, Dust is hazardous thus wear a mask!
Conclusion: : Not a smart alternative for novice carvers.
